Heroes of the Household - Summer Learning

Summer break will be here before we know it, and you want to make sure your kids stay engaged and learning while having fun. Luckily, Trotwood-Madison City Schools' Freedom Summer program and free opportunities in Dayton offer plenty of exciting ways to keep your kids learning this summer. Here are three fun and easy ways to do just that:

  1. Explore the Freedom Summer Program

Trotwood-Madison City Schools' Freedom Summer program is the perfect way to keep your kids learning and engaged this summer. With free breakfast and lunch and a range of activities, including STEM projects, art projects, music lessons, and more, your kids will have a blast while learning.

  1. Check Out Free Opportunities in Dayton

The Dayton area offers many free opportunities for kids to learn and have fun this summer. The Dayton Metro Library's summer reading program and free access to educational apps, like ABCmouse and Khan Academy, are just a few examples. The Dayton Art Institute and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra also offer free activities and events for children throughout the summer.

  1. Incorporate Learning Apps

Learning apps, like Duolingo and Prodigy, can be a fun and engaging way for kids to maintain academic skills during the summer. Encourage your kids to practice their math, reading, and reasoning skills while enjoying their favorite apps.

Beware of Summer Slide:

When children do not stay engaged in learning throughout the summer, they can lose academic progress and skills that they worked hard to gain during the school year. Research has shown that students who experience summer slide can lose up to two months of academic progress in reading and math. This can lead to difficulties when returning to school in the fall and can ultimately impact their long-term academic success. By keeping your kids engaged and learning throughout the summer with fun and educational activities, you can help prevent summer slide and set your children up for success.

Keeping your kids learning and engaged this summer doesn't have to be a chore. With Trotwood-Madison City Schools' Freedom Summer program, free opportunities in Dayton, and fun learning apps, your kids can learn and grow while having a blast. So, get out there and explore all that the Dayton area has to offer this summer!
